Tribulus arabicus, also known by its synonym Tribulus omanense, proudly stands as the national flower of the United Arab Emirates. With its bright yellow blooms, this resilient plant symbolises the strength and unique character of the region's desert landscape. Belonging to the Zygophyllaceae family, it was first formally described by Hosni in the book Botaniska Notiser in 1977.
Typically, a perennial, Tribulus arabicus thrives in desert and dry shrubland biomes, showcasing remarkable resilience in harsh, arid conditions. Its ability to adapt and flourish in such an environment makes it a fascinating subject for any botanist studying global plant distribution.
This very resilience is perhaps why "Tribulus" proudly serves as the name for the journal of the Emirates Natural History Group. Established in 1976, this organisation is the oldest environmental non-government organisation in the United Arab Emirates, reflecting a long-standing commitment to understanding and preserving the natural heritage of the Emirates.
